English for Migrants Programme

Speaking and understanding the English language is a very important part of settling well in New Zealand.

If you have difficulties in being understood or understanding English you can enrol in classes to improve your English.

English language classes are run by organisations including secondary schools, private training agencies and community groups.

Classes are referred to as ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages.

The first place to go is the ESOL Assessment and Access Specialist Service. This free service helps you to find the most appropriate ESOL course for you. You will receive an assessment, advice and a referral to the right place to learn English. Contact esol.advice@xtra.co.nz or ring the their toll free HelpLine 0800 601 301.

If you have pre-paid for "English for Migrants" lessons before leaving your country you need to access the recommended providers for this tuition.

If you did not arrange for  ESOL lessons prior to coming to New Zealand, you can contact ESOL Assessment & Access Specialist Service for a complete list of ESOL providers.
